HISTORICAL COMMISSION MEETS IN WINNIE-STOWELL

The Chambers County Historical Commission met last week at Papas Restaurant for a regular monthly meeting. Melissa Hodges of the Winnie-Stowell Chamber of Commerce gave a presentation concerning tourism in Chambers County. She discussed the need for a county wide tourism map to be distributed to travel centers, that would provide travelers with information concerning the many tourism opportunities that are located in the county. The presentation was well received by the commission as many of the tourism activities are related to historical sites and activities. The commission offered to assist the three area chambers in the county with the project.

The commission then heard reports from the various committee chairs. Commission Chair Bob Wheat reported that the County Historical Commission has again been recognized by the State to receive a Distinguished Service Award for activities accomplished in 2008. Chair Wheat and Vice-Chair R.B. Scherer, Jr. plan to attend the State Historical Preservation Conference in April to receive the award.

The essay contest was discussed and noted that the deadline for entries is the second week of April. Junior and Senior High School students from all county school districts are urged to participate. The subject matter for the contest is how Hurricane Ike affected the student, their community and Chambers County.

The Historical Marker for the old Mexican Cemetery located on the south shoreline of Lake Anahuac is expected to arrive in the near future. The Boy Scout Troop from Pt. Arthur has agreed to assist with cleaning the cemetery prior to a dedication ceremony for the marker.

The Historical Commission meets the fourth Saturday of each month and the public is encouraged to attend. Anyone with an interest in joining the commission may contact Bob Wheat, Chair or they may stop by the Historical Museum/Archives Building for more information. The museum is open Monday-Friday from 8am -12noon and 1pm-5pm
