CHAMBERS COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION TO OUTLINE FORT ANAHUAC

During a Regular Meeting on February 28 th , the Chambers County Historical Commission discussed a plan for outlining Fort Anahuac . The project was initiated late last summer when the outline of the fort was marked on the ground. However, Hurricane Ike arrived before the project was completed and it has been on hold ever since. The outline will be comprised of parking lot bumpers that will be placed at ground level. Anyone that would like to assist the commission with the project should come to Fort Anahuac Park on Monday, March 9 th at 8:00 am .

The commission also discussed the upcoming Essay Contest. All three school districts in the county have been encouraged to participate. The theme for the contest will be how Hurricane Ike impacted the student, the student’s community and the county. Barbers Hill ISD has won all of the previous contests so Anahuac and East Chambers are challenged to win this year’s trophy.

The Historical Marker for the old Mexican Cemetery located on the south shoreline of Lake Anahuac has been approved by the Texas Historical Commission. A ceremony to place the marker will be forthcoming.

Reports were also given by the various committee chairs, including the goals and planned projects of each committee. The committees are now required to present their plans to the Texas Historical Commission for review.

The Chambers County Historical Commission meets on the fourth Saturday of each month at 9:00 am in the Archive/Museum building and the public is encouraged to attend. Anyone interested in joining the commission should contact Bob Wheat, Commission Chair to obtain information. Commission members are appointed by Chambers County Commissioner’s Court.
