HISTORICAL COMMISSION ELECTS OFFICERS

The Chambers County Historical Commission met on January 24, 2009 and one of the first items of business was the election of Commission Officers. The results of the election were Bob Wheat, Chair; R.B. Scherer,Jr., Vice Chair; Kay Willcox, Secretary; and Kenneth Standley, Treasurer. Officer terms are two years.

The various Committee Chairs reported on recent activities including the Christmas Parade and Toy Drive. The Toy Drive was somewhat hindered by Hurricane Ike but a good number of toys were collected for distribution to needy families.

The Cemetery Committee, chaired by R.B. Scherer, Jr. is planning another tour and clean-up project for the J.T. White Cemetery located south of IH-10 near Hankamer. The Huffman Cemetery at Round Point was also discussed as another project for 2009. Work is also continuing on the old Mexican Cemetery located on the south shoreline of Lake Anahuac.

The Commission is also working on a project to outline the original Fort at Anahuac. The project was started last fall but was stalled by Hurricane Ike. The Texas Historical Commission Permit for the project has been extended until April 1st.

The Historical Museum/Archive Building is now open Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and the public is urged to visit. The museum is staffed by Ms. Jackie Brookshire, and she is happy to assist all visitors. The Historical Commission meets in the Museum/Archive Building on the fourth Saturday of each month at 9:00 am and the public is encouraged to attend.
