The Chambers County Historical Commission presented the grave marker honoring Private Jasper Skeeters to the Winnie Post 255 of the American Legion during a regular Post Meeting last week.
The marker was unearthed during a construction project near County Line Road and SH 73 several years ago and was given to the Commission for safe keeping. Private Skeeters was born December 14, 1892 and was a member of Company K, 39th Infantry, 4th Division of the U.S. Army. He died on July 18, 1918 in Chouy, France during World War I.

The marker has remained idle in the County Archives until last summer when Boy Scout David Hasson of Winnie, offered to clean and refurbish the many Historical Markers located throughout the County. Scout Hasson is in the process of earning his Eagle Badge and this project will be undertaken for that purpose. He has been trained in the formal process approved by the Texas Historical Commission for marker rejuvenation and County Commission Chair Bob Wheat made the Skeeters Marker available as his first marker.

Anyone with any knowledge of Private Skeeters or the history of the Skeeters Family is urged to contact Chair Wheat or any member of the Winnie Post 255. The Winnie Post also sponsors a Veterans gathering the first Wednesday of each month at 9:00 am at the Winnie Arboretum and they urge all Veterans to drop by and share stories. Veterans are also encouraged to provide an oral interview to the County Historical Commission and they may do so by contacting Chair Bob Wheat.
