The Chambers County Historical Commission met at the Thomas Jefferson Chambers Home on November 18th and one of the main items of discussion was the up coming Christmas Town Gathering and Toy Drive. The Chambers Home will be open on December 9th and December 16th from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm while Commission members will be serving refreshments and collecting toys. The toys will be distributed to all areas of Chambers County so widespread public participation is encouraged. The Home will be fully decorated and everyone is invited to drop by.

The various committees reported on their activities. Andrea McCelland, Chair of the History Preservation Committee reported that a History Essay Contest will be conducted in all three school districts in the County next year. The contest this year was won by Ashlee Rusk of the Barbers Hill Middle School.

The Commission also adopted a Resolution recognizing the contribution of Shell Pipeline for repairing the State Historical Marker on the Dr. Edward G. Hartman Cemetery located in West Chambers County. The marker was damaged by a construction project and the Shell Pipeline Company employees made the necessary repairs to return the Marker to its original condition. A formal presentation of the Resolution will be made to Shell Pipeline during the Commission’s regular meeting in January.

The Commission will also participate in the Christmas Parade scheduled for December 7th. The parade will terminate at the Thomas Jefferson Chambers Home for the official lighting of the Town Christmas Tree and the appearance of Santa Claus to meet the children. The parade begins at 4:30 pm and everyone is encouraged to come out and enjoy the festivities.

The Fort Anahuac Program was discussed with various members reporting on their activities. The Fort Celebration will be conducted on June 9, 2007 to commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the Battle of Anahuac. This battle was the first skirmish in what latter became the war for Texas Independence. The celebration will be held in Fort Anahuac Park and the public is also encouraged to participate in this event.

The Commission will begin meeting on the fourth Saturday of each month with the next meeting in January 2007. The meetings are open to the public and participation by the public is encouraged. Commission members are appointed by the Chambers County Commissioners Court and anyone with an interest in becoming a member may contact Bob Wheat, Commission Chair.
