Hankamer Home Recognized
as Historic House by CCHC

The Chambers County Historical Commission recently placed an old house recognition sign at the home of Wayne and PD Hankamer.

The house, located on SH 61 in Hankamer, was built in the late 1890’s by Ira A. Hankamer. Ira married Martha Anna Noack Junghanf in 1893 and built the house shortly thereafter.

In 1912, the house was enlarged when Ira purchased a structure from Josh Harmon, rolled it on logs from the Harmon property and attached it to the house.

The house was enlarged again in the late 1950’s by Wayne’s father and just recently, the fourth enlargement was made by Wayne and PD.

The community of Hankamer was originally known as Crackers Neck but was renamed Hankamer in 1904 when Ira built the first Post Office and became the first Post Master there.
