HISTORICAL COMMISSION PLANS TOY DRIVE

The Chambers County Historical Commission met last week for the first time since Hurricane Ike. A major item of discussion was the annual Christmas Toy Drive. This year, the drive will be conducted on Saturday, December 6 th and Saturday, December 13 th at the Historical Archives/Museum Building in Anahuac . In addition to traditional children’s toys, the Commission is also suggesting that small household appliances or other household items be brought to assist families that lost all belongings to the hurricane. On December 13 th , Santa will be present to greet the children and parents that drop by.

The various committees reported on different activities for the Commission. Work is ongoing to obtain a State Historical Marker for the old Anahuac Mexican Cemetery located on the south shoreline of Lake Anahuac . The boundaries of the cemetery have been located as well as one remaining grave site.

The Commission will also conduct a Historical Essay Contest in the spring and all Chambers County Schools are encouraged to participate. Subject matter for the essays will be provided to the schools in January.

The Historical Commission meets on the fourth Saturday of each month at the Archives/Museum Building located at 300 Cummings Street in Anahuac and the public is encouraged to attend.  The next meeting date is January 24, 2009.
