HISTORICAL COMMISSION WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS

by Pudge Willcox
CCHC Publicity Chair

The Chambers County Historical Commission welcomed two new members at a Regular Meeting held last week in the Commission's Archive Building. Jan Hasson of Winnie and Paul Rice of Anahuac were recently appointed by the Chambers County Commissioners Court.

Guest speaker for the meeting was Ms. Beverly Hahn Carroll of Deer Park. She provided a history of her family that included members that had fought at San Jacinto with General Sam Houston. She described how her ancestors had been driven from their home in Colorado County near Columbus by the Mexican Army marching to San Jacinto and how they had taken refuge in Liberty. Following Sam Houston's victory at San Jacinto, her family was able to return to their home.

Chair Bob Wheat reported on the History Essay Contest that recently ended. Some seventy entrants from the Barbers Hill Middle School provided essays and the winner will receive a trophy and U.S. Savings Bond. Last year's winner was Ashlee Rusk from Barbers Hill. The awards for this year's contestants will be presented in May.

Again, a major item of discussion was the upcoming Celebration for the 175th Anniversary of the Battle at Fort Anahuac. Committee Chairs are making final preparations for the event, which will take place on Saturday, June 9 th. A parade will commence at the Courthouse and travel to Fort Anahauc Park where Sam Houston IV will be the featured speaker. The Texas Army will provide a re-enactment of the skirmish between the local Anglo settlers and the Mexican Army. Food and Craft Booths will be available and music will be provided by several live bands.
