Historical Development: This 10-horsepower steam sawmill ran 4.5 months during the census year ending May 31, 1880. During that time it employed nine persons (three children under the age of sixteen) and operated on the ten hour day. Wages paid averaged from $1.00 to $2.50 per day, and the mill owners paid $460 in wages during the year. The mill did not do its own logging. Lumber was shipped down Turtle Bayou to Galveston Bay. Branch and Clayton had $1200 invested in the mill.
